aeroIScope for the Automated Manupulation of Slides to Make Serial Microscopic Images

aeroIScope® is a prototype of an automatic slide scanning apparatus!! It was constructed to simulate the routine pollen counting in appropriate time and at reasonable costs!

For standard monitoring, 3 longitudinal lines on up to 10 standard slide s are scanned with demanded accuracy (now 0.2 µm positioning). Ofher patterns of slide scanning can be programed: Each point of a slide can be reached and integrated in a custom made schem.

The number of pictures can be limited to about 100 pictures per line, thus in less than 5 minutes a slide can be operated, needing 750 Mb storage capacity,

- Using a magnification, able to see details of the grain and
- Focussing automatically as often as needed.

Both options become possible by the aroprot® staining of the pollen: It gives a clear contrast for discrimination from other particles and a special partitioning of colour (special pattern) enables discrimination of certain pollen species. For this reasons Only one level of focus per picture is sufficient and PCS image analysis software can detect and discriminate pollen from the images and classify it according to discrete criteria, extracted from the picture segments and defined by operator in sets of rules.

4.4 Activating the autofocus function of the aeroScope, for searching the global (overall) position of the focus level oder to correct it for a local position.
Automatic Processing of Slides

5.1 Area to select the number and position of the slides on the holder of the aeroScope to be inspected. Enlage for Details! Name/ID refers to the name of the refering image directory and must be given for each slide.
Slidetyp refers to the kind of sample preparation: Particles on the slide or on a film on a slide.
Process indicates the pattern of images taken from the slide. Standard procedures are available, but custom taylored pattern can be created with the "slide creator".

Buttons dircet the system to certain positions: Initial, side or bottom, next or previos one, middle of the slide.
5.3 An option to reduce the area of taken images for all line options to the central half of the slide.
5.4 Buttons to select a decent pattern of the automatic picture sampling. Four different lines can be combined for scanning (in this version).
5.5 Button to start the scanning of the slides according to the settings made at 5.1.
